The Oklahoma Nutcracker Story

Act I is set on Christmas Eve in 1907 at the Overholser Mansion in Oklahoma City.  Henry and Anna Overholser are hosting their annual  holiday party for their neighbors when family friend and opera impresario, Sam Schubert, arrives.  He delights the children with candy and magic tricks and presents a special gift to Henry Ione Overholser, a wooden Nutcracker dressed as a soldier. As the evening’s festivities end, Henry Ione cradles her beloved Nutcracker and drifts off to sleep. At the stroke of midnight, she awakens to a strange new world in which her Nutcracker Prince protects her from a giant Mouse King and leads her on a journey through the snowy Oklahoma woods. From there, the children arrive at the Oklahoma Prairie, where, as the sun sets, they are welcomed by the Sand Plum Fairy. As Henry Ione sits atop a Rose Rock throne, characters drawn from Oklahoma wildlife and nature dance to the Tchaikovsky score in her honor, culminating in the Grand Pas de Deux with the Sand Plum Fairy and her Cavalier.
